The 2009 Inter Island Indoor Bowls Tournament in the Isle of Wight kicks-off.

The Isle of Man team prepare to kick off the tournament, first up is the Ladies 4's (Mary Crummy, Marilyn Ellison, Lesley Keenan and Mary Aderson) team, who after a good start began to lose site of their Isle of Wght opposition. It was a good effort with the final score 28 v 12 to the IOW.

Next up was Mary Alderson in her singles match against the Isle of Wight Lady and after a bright start Mary began to build up a nice lead, which she retained until the last 4 ends when her opponent began to claw the game back. Twice Mary was lying 4 down and saved 3 with her last wood, which didn't do much for the IOM supporters, however she finished the game with a flourish winning the last two ends.

Tony Dugdale and David Thomas made it 2 wins out of 3 with their 20 v 15 win over the Shetland Isle's Doubles team in a nervy encounter, with the game going to the wire at 16 v 15 coming to the last end. Tony and David held their nerve to set themselves up nicely for the rest of the week.

The final game pf the day see's Iain McDougal up against Darren Griffith from the Isle of Wight and after an even start Darren began to impress with some fine bowling to finally run out the winner 21 v 8.

Tuesday got off to a bad start with both Mary and Iain losing their singles matchs against Guernsey and Alderney respectiively. Mary played well in her encounter with Guernsey's Shirley Pettit, however after a close start the channel islands lady moved away for a comfortable 21 v 8 win. Iain never really got going against Alerney's Will Ceillam and went down 21 v 8. Things improved greatly in the afternoon with both Men's and Ladies 4's winning comfortably. The Men lead by MHK David Quirk breezed through 26 v 12 to get their campaign off to a good start. The Ladies lead by Mary Alderson did their cause no harm with a 25 v 9 wn over Orkney and now face and anxious wait see to see if they have done enough to make the bronze play-off.

Wednesday got off to a great start with the Men's 4's skiped by Nigel Thomas winning their second game 18 v 16 against Orkney, however this close encounter went to the wire with the skip needing his last bowl to close out the game for the IOM. Another win against Alderney on Thursday morning will see the 4's into Friday's final, however they can't afford to be complacent as Alderey dispatched Ynys Mon to give themselves a shot in thier final game.

Wednesday afternoon was led by David Thomas and Tony Dugdale in the Men's doubles up against the Alderney pair and after a close start the IOM pair pulled away to noth up their second win of the week. The final game of the day saw Wyn Collister and Joan Storrey win against a strong pair from Guernsey 18 v 14, which gives them a great chance of progressing to Friday's final.

Thursday morning kicked off with the final game for the Men's 4's against Alderney with the IOM team needing a win or a draw to progress to Friday's final, however it wasn't to be as Alderney won a tense encounter 19 v 12 and just pipped the IOM team on aggregate, with both teams level on 4 points. The Men will now play Shetland Isle's in Friday mornings Bronze playoff.

Playing at the same time as the Men's 4's were Wyn and Joan in the Ladies doubles and after a very close game the ladies were pipped on the last end, however it was enough to see them reach Friday's final.

Next up for the Men's team were David Thomas and Tony Dugdale in the doubles against Orkney and the IOM pair dominated from start to finish, winning 23 v 6 to book a place in Fridays final.

The final game on Thursday saw Iain McDougal up aganst Richard Graham from Orkney and after a gtart Iin never lookd back clsoing out the game 21 v 8, just missing out on the bronze play-off on aggregate points.

First match on finals day for our teams was the Ladies fours against Shetland. The girls fought hard, but on the day where unable to stay with an on form Shetland team, who ran out comfortable winners.

The Men's fours got off to a bad start against Shetland who stormed ahead 16 v 3. With a mountain to climb the lads put on a fighting display, pulling back Shetlands lead end by end to get close at 20-16. However they left themselves too much to do and in the end Shetland won 25-20 at the last end.

The IOM teams first medal of the tournament came in the Ladies pairs and " GOLD" at that! A fantastic display of bowls from Joan Storry (lead) and Wyn Collister (skip) was too much for the Ladies from Alderney. The best possible start to the IOM team's medal haul.

Next up, with the Men's Pairs Gold at stake, where Tony Dugdale (lead) and David Thomas (skip). They faced a formidable pair from Guernsey and a hard fought match got underway. The lads battled well but went down 29-19. Still a "SILVER" medal to add to the teams haul is a great achievement, well done Tony and David.

The final match of the tournament saw Mary Alderson competing for the bronze medal in the Ladies singles and the team had high hopes that Mary would be able to add to the medal tally. A highly competitive match required Mary to draw on all her experience and she eventually triumphed 21-16 over Orkney to claim the " BRONZE ", well done Mary and all the IOM players.

Well done the Isle of Man team.

Some breaking news the IOMIBA has announced at the games that it will host the 2011 Indoor Bowling Games at the NSC. More details to follow soon.

World Lawn Singles Champion of Champions - Ayr

The Isle of Mans stature and reputation on the International Scene of the Flat Green bowling world was once again enhanced in the past week due to the efforts of Stephen McIntyre at the World Champion of Champions Singles Competition at the Centre for Bowling Excellence at Northfield in Ayr.  Stephen representing the island at this prestigious event won 5 of his section games against Malaysia, Spain, Botswana, United States and New Zealand and narrowly losing in the tie break to Canada, and with just a little luck during the remaining section games may have just crept into the final qualifying stages.  Probably the highlight was defeating the Malaysian Champion Azim Ariffin who plays professionally all over the world.

It was an outstanding effort by Stephen and this coupled with the Flat Greens efforts at the European Championships,  it shows that where Flat Green Bowls are involved at International Competition we are certainly heading in right direction. Stephen is pictured after his win against Malaysia with Azim Ariffin.

Cancer will not beat battling bowler Andy Munro.

Andy Munro will compete in the World Singles Champion of Champions Lawn Bowls Competition in Aberdeen.

"I may never have the chance to compete at this level again. But I remain positive and hope to put the Isle of Man on the lawn bowling map"

CANCER sufferer Andy Munro will fulfil his ambition this week when he competes in an international bowls competition.

'I was having pain in my side for about a year,' Andy explained. 'When I first came to the Isle of Man I started doing more physical work and thought it was just a strained muscle. I went and got it checked out and was sent for a scan and they found my kidney was enveloped with a tumour.' He had the scan on May 15, 2007 and was operated on just two weeks later.

His daughter Reeanne, was born in January 2007, just months before he was diagnosed and, following surgery, Andy found it difficult at times to pick her up.

Despite having major surgery and receiving the news that the cancer has spread to his lungs, Andy returned to the
bowling green and won the Men's Singles Club Championships in 2007, enabling him to qualify for this year's event.

Andy is receiving ongoing drug treatment for the tumours in his lungs and although there have been setbacks in his treatment he has remained positive and focused throughout. Side effects from the medication caused his remaining kidney to fail which led to the dosage being reduced.

'I'm feeling OK but get a bit tired,' he said. 'When I get on the
bowling green it just goes to the back of my mind and I just concentrate on the bowls.'

The World Singles Champion of Champions Lawn Bowls Competition takes place in Aberdeen until September 6 and, thanks to Manx Cancer Help and local businesses Andy, 46, of Saddlestone will be representing the Isle of Man.

He played at a high level in Scotland but said there were more opportunities to take it further in the Isle of Man.

'I'm playing against 24 of the best in the world as far as bowls is concerned,' Andy said. 'It's probably, next to the World Singles Championships, the second biggest event in the bowling calendar.' While there are some high profile contenders he 'hopes to take some scalps'. 'I'm not really fazed about it. I've played some of them before,' he added.

Managing director of Miracles Recruitment Tom Martin said Andy's situation had touched a raw nerve and he had great pleasure in donating £400 to help make his dream come true. Bank of Scotland International also donated £100 and the Steam Packet Company have assisted with travel costs.

Andy said the firms' generosity had also touched a raw nerve and without their help he would not have been able to afford the cost of travel, accommodation and uniform.

'With cancer you don't know what's around the corner, but bowling is my passion and it gives me something to focus on away from the reality of having cancer,' he said.

'This is one of the biggest events in the lawn bowls calendar and I may never have the chance to compete at this level again. But I remain positive and hope to put the Isle of Man on the lawn bowling map.'

World Indoor Bowling Championships – Swansea 2008

The IOM Indoor Bowling Association had three players representing the Isle of Man this week in the World Indoor Bowling Championships at Swansea. Ladies Singles Champion Mary Alderson, Men’s Singles Champion Tony Dugdale and Men’s Singles Championship Runner Up Edward Alderson.

To put the Isle of Man’s participation in some sort of context, the IOMIBA has less than 100 members, the English Indoor Bowling Association has over 27,000 members, and although numbers isn’t a guarantee of class, there’s clearly a massive difference in experience.

Last years Men’s Singles Champion Mervyn King was defending his Championship in the Men’s Singles event and as an example of the quality of the field he is an ex Professional Singles World Champion and is currently ranked No. 7 in the World by the Professional Bowlers Association.

In the Ladies event last years Champion Claire Johnson was defending her title.

In the Ladies event Mary’s first game was against the defending champion, Claire Johnson and Mary got off to a terrific start taking the first set 9 v 7, before Claire showed her class in the second set, which she took 10 v 3. Mary put up a fight in the tie break, just losing out 2 v 1. Despite this loss, Mary will have taken great heart from taking a set off the defending champion.

In her second game, she was up against Celena Kwok and Mary continued her good form from her first game to take the first set 10 v 6 and hung on to earn a 7 v 7 draw in the second set, which was enough to secure the 2 points for winning the match.

In Mary’s final game she was up against one of the Malaysian Professional Bowlers, Nor Shafeeqah Yayah and although both sets were very tight the Malaysian did enough in each set to take the match and earn the maximum 6 points from her 3 games and top slot in the group. Mary finished a solid third in the group and just missed out on a quarter final place.

Edwards first game was against Graham Shadwell of England and it was the Englishman who got off to the better start, taking the first set 6 v 3, Edward was just starting to get going and completely dominated the second set, taking it 12 v 2 and would have been a favourite to take the match on the tie break, however Shadwell found his form to take the tie break 2 v 0.

In his second game he came up against Thomas Greechan from Jersey and Edward got off to a great start taking the first set 9 v 7, Greechan fought back hard in the second set taking it 11 v 5, with room to spare. Edward had obviously learnt his tie break lesson and he secured the match with a 2 v 0 victory.

In his final game Edward needed a win to secure a place in Saturday’s quarter final and he was up against Scott Kennedy from Scotland, who had lost his first two games. Kennedy suddenly found some form and won the first set in impressive style 14 v 4 and although Edward fought back to earn a 7 v 7 draw in the second set it wasn’t enough to stop Kennedy earning the 2 points. In the final count-up Edward just lost out on shot difference, with Kennedy doing enough in his last game to take second spot in the group, with Edward third.

Our final participant Tony Dugdale had only taken up Indoor Bowling three years ago, so this was his first visit to the World Championships, whereas Mary and Edward had experienced Bowls at this level previously. Tony is however a very experienced Crown Green Bowler and regularly finishes in the top 15 in the First Division Merits so his perhaps unlucky not to have experienced International Bowls in the Crown format.

Tony’s first game was against up against Barry Kane from Ireland and Tony got off to the worst possible start being 7 v 0 down in the first set, however Tony is nothing but a fighter and he fought back to earn a 7 v 7 draw in his very first World Championship set. The second set went with the more experienced player and Kane ran out 14 v 7 winner, taking the 2 points for the match.

In Tony’s second game he was up against a player familiar to him. Steve Desperques from Guernsey was part of the Guernsey squad for the recent Guernsey Games, were Tony and his Son Ben were part of the IOM squad. Tony was very unlucky just to lose the first set 7 v 6, but fought back strongly taking the second set comfortably 10 v 5. In the tie break Tony hung on to clinch the final end and pick up his first World Championship points and give him a real chance of a quarter final spot.

In Tony’s final game he was up against the very experienced Welsh player Daniel Gough and from the off the match was very hard for Tony. Gough secured the first set 13 v 7, and continued his form to take the second 12 v 8 and the match.
