Outdoor Winter League Bowling Club – Report 12 (03 January)

By Steve Moore

For the first time since it was formed, the Manx Petroleum sponsored Outdoor Winter League Bowling Club held two sessions away from Nobles Park, when they headed south to Castletown over the weekend to try and get their league fixtures back on track after the enforced closure of their regular venue.

With the facilities at Nobles No.3 green not available for longer than was originally planned, at the time of writing this the club secretary was in the process of arranging alternative locations for the next two weekends.

Looking at Saturday’s games, conditions under foot were not ideal in the cold weather and some players struggled to cope with a tricky surface. In fact the opening encounter saw Louie’s Angels record just 28 points in a five games to one defeat against Seven Up.

The victors kept up that good form with a convincing win over Angry Mob who were sitting top of the points averages before this result. Some of the Angels still struggled in their second outing, they finished three-all on games, but 25 points adrift of Angry Mob, who faired better in the final battle of the Club’s away day.

Storming to wins in both his games the last undefeated player in the league is Seven Up’s Kevin Quirk. After top performing for his team in the opener, he then beat current merit cup holder Dave Thomas. Other leading players were Ray Watterson (Seven Up); Nigel Thomas, Steve Cook and Sean Cade (Angry Mob) along with Margaret Tasker, twice for Louie’s Angels.

Results for Saturday 2 January: Louie’s Angels 28 (1), Seven Up 84 (5); Seven Up 78 (4), Angry Mob 50 (2); Angry Mob 76 (3), Louie’s Angels 51 (3).

Day two down south proved to be equally difficult with the surface frozen solid and described as like playing on concrete! Obviously having had experience of such conditions, Chancers dropped just five points against Erin Porters who unfortunately were a player short. Jean Thackrah (Porters) and Ian Moore (Chancers) were best for their respective teams.

Just one point separated the two sides involved in the next fixture and although winning four of the games, Govags lost out to Bits ‘n’ Bobs, for whom Trevor Quayle was their best performer, and for the westerners it was Jack Lee.

Recording their second score over 80, Chancers were pushed all the way by a Govags side that improved their points average with two good results. The leading players were Stuey Garrett (Chancers) and Les Halsall.

Bits ‘n’ Bobs then notched up their second success, this time by a bigger margin against Erin Porters. Trevor Quayle making it a double in top performances and not to be left out, it was Bernard Thackrah for the Porters.

Results for Sunday 3 January: Erin Porters 61 (2), Chancers 85 (4); Govags 75 (4), Bits ‘n’ Bobs 76 (2); Chancers 81 (4), Govags 70 (2); Bits ‘n’ Bobs 72 (4), Erin Porters 57 (2).

Thanks are expressed to Castletown Bowling Club for the use of their facilities, but unfortunately the Club could not secure a venue for this weekend. There is better news for the following Saturday and Sunday when the action will hopefully take place at the Villa Marina green. Meanwhile the Christmas tombola has been drawn, please contact the secretary for names of winners.

Outdoor Winter League Bowling Club – Report 11 (20 December)

By Steve Moore

Not much to report on the Manx Petroleum sponsored Outdoor Winter League Bowling Club, except to say that for the first time since it all began, a full committee meeting was held earlier this week to decide the best plan in order to squeeze in their programme of fixtures in the time remaining.

All those concerned will be aware that the action is switching venues to Castletown for a one-off weekend on January 2 and 3, when it is also hoped to draw the Christmas tombola at the conclusion of play on that Saturday.

Obviously with some teams having played up to four games more than others the following list of the top 50 in the individual merit may be a bit misleading, but as of December 6 those leading the way are: 1 Gill Dixon (Chancers) pld 10, pts 145; 2 Stuart Garrett (Chancers) 10, 141; 3 Lil Smith (Beachcombers) 10, 140; 4 Paul Bailey (Parkers) 10, 136; 5 Ian Moore (Chancers) 10, 134; 6 Alan Moore (Chancers) 10, 134; 7 Joanne Smith (Parkers) 10, 133; 8 John Watters (Bits ‘n’ Bobs) 10, 126; 9 Tom Wilson (Bits ‘n’ Bobs) 10, 124; 10 Kevin Quirk (Seven Up) 8, 120; 11 Bob Clark (Castletown Corkers) 8, 119; 12 Alec Taylor (Seven Up) 8, 113; 13 Ken Williams (Seven Up) 8, 111; 14 Brian Woodall (Parkers) 10, 111; 15 Derek Lewney (Corkers) 8, 110; 16 Val Macfarlane (Corkers) 8, 109; 17 Mike Thomas (Parkers) 8, 109; 18 Heather Horsburgh (Beachcombers) 8, 104; 19 Paula Garrett (Chancers) 9, 100; 20 Susan Pickard (Erin Porters) 8, 95; 21 Phil Davies (Beachcombers) 8, 95; 22 Tom Lord (Beachcombers) 8, 93; 23 Eileen Killey (Outsiders) 8, 91; 24 David Thomas (Angry Mob) 6, 90; 25 Tricia Bull (Louie's Angels) 6, 89; 26 Geoff Mayles (Bits ‘n’ Bobs) 6, 88; 27 Dave Comish (Bits ‘n’ Bobs) 8, 88; 28 Dave Hollingworth (Corkers) 7, 87; 29 Hannah Kermode (Castletown Cannons) 7, 87; 30 Edward Trustham (Angry Mob) 6, 86; 31 Nigel Thomas (Angry Mob) 6, 86; 32 Louis Callister (Angels) 6, 86; 33 Terry Moore (Parkers) 8, 86; 34 Ken Karran (Angels) 6, 85; 35 Steve Cook (Angry Mob) 6, 83; 36 Derek Clarke (Outsiders) 7, 83; 37 Phil Kerruish (Chancers) 6, 82; 38 Jack Lee (Govags) 6, 82; 39 Ray Hardman (Beachcombers) 6, 82; 40 Margaret Tasker (Angels) 6, 81; 41 David Turner (Outsiders) 7, 81; 42 Arthur Ashcroft (Seven Up) 8, 81; 43 Ian Pendlebury (Beachcombers) 8, 81; 44 Jordan Drewett (Cannons) 7, 80; 45 Bernard Thackrah (Erin Porters) 8, 77; 46 Ray Watterson (Seven Up) 6, 76; 47 Shirley Whelan (Beachcombers) 7, 75; 48 Geoff Osborn (Seven Up) 8, 75; 49 Harry Minor (Erin Porters) 8, 74; 50 Philippa Fletcher (Outsiders) 6, 69.

Let’s keep our fingers crossed that all goes well and the green is open as planned early in 2010, in the meantime best wishes to everyone for a great Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Outdoor Winter League Bowling Club – Report 10 (13 December)

By Steve Moore

The organisers of the Manx Petroleum sponsored Outdoor Winter League Bowling Club were handed a great early Christmas present this week with an offer from Castletown Bowling Club to use their green and ease the problem of a back log of fixtures caused by them losing the use of their regular venue until the New Year.

Coming after a weekend when those due to be playing were left twiddling their thumbs instead of enjoying some of the driest weather for some time, it is a chance to get back into action sooner than anticipated.

This is not a long term alternative or replacement, but a one-off weekend for which the club are extremely grateful and first up will be a set of games originally due to take place last Saturday. A decision has been taken not to involve either of the Castletown teams in the two days planned which will be held over the weekend of January 2 and 3, 2010.

Day one will see Louie’s Angels v Seven Up; Seven Up v Angry Mob and Angry Mob v Louie’s Angels. The next day will see fixtures brought forward from later in January, Erin Porters v Chancers; Govags v Bits ‘n’ Bobs; Chancers v Govags and Bits ‘n’ Bobs v Erin Porters.

Unfortunately this will leave some teams with a larger than usual number of games to play in a relatively short time but I hope that everyone will pull together and get through this situation. Not much else to report on the progress of Nobles No.3, suffice to say that work has begun and we await some good news.

In next week’s report I hope to bring you up to date with the Merit positions as things stand, along with the latest on the Christmas Tombola; but in the meantime the current league table is as follows:

(as at 6 December)                                      P               For          Av pts

Chancers                                                   10              801             80.1

Outdoor Winter League Bowling Club – Report 9 (06 December)

By Steve Moore

Just before a weekend when the Manx Petroleum sponsored Outdoor Winter League Bowling Club finally got two days of action, the organisers were rocked by the news that Nobles No.3 green was to close for approximately one month, and coming on top of some recent postponements a league fixture headache looms as no alternative venue is available.

Writing this whilst making my way back to the Island I can only assume from looking at the scores that the playing surface was difficult to say the least and coping best on the first day saw Castletown Cannons leave with the best haul of points.

Playing their opponents twice on the same afternoon Saturday’s fixtures firstly saw the Cannons notch up a good 80 points, before improving that by one next time out against Outsiders, who could only record two scores under 60, not helped by the fact they were a player missing. The leaders were Ron Williams and Ann Oates (Cannons) and for Outsiders it was Pat Dacre and Eileen Killey.

The other two sides competing ended up with one win a piece, Parkers were successful in the opener before Beachcombers triumphed in the return. Peter Karran was the best player in both outings for Parkers, while for the opposing side it was Lil Smith and Heather Horsburgh.

Results for Saturday 5 December: Castletown Cannons (4) 80, Outsiders (2) 57; Outsiders (1) 58, Cannons (5) 81; Parkers (4) 80, Beachcombers (2) 71; Beachcombers (4) 77, Parkers (2) 62.

Sunday saw the last scheduled fixtures until the new year because of the closure and with three of the lower placed teams taking to the green it was a chance for one of them to move clear of the bottom.

Taking that initiative from the outset were Bits ‘n’ Bobs who dropped just 10 points in their opener against Erin Porters, before finishing level with Govags on 68 apiece in their next clash. Finally a low scoring encounter took place between two teams from the west and south, with Erin Porters coming out on top when they beat Govags.

Top performances came from Sue Pickard and Harry Minor (Porters); Voirrey Curphey, Dave Comish and Geoff Mayles (Bits), and for Govags it was Kevin Mort and Frank Watson.

Results for Sunday 6 December: Erin Porters (1) 52, Bits ‘n’ Bobs (5) 80; Bits ‘n’ Bobs (3) 68, Govags (3) 68; Govags (2) 57, Erin Porters (4) 65.

Unfortunately as mentioned earlier this will leave five sessions without dates, providing there are no problems and the green is available in time for the programme to re-commence on January 9. Keep your eyes on this column for more info on this, along with news on the Christmas Tombola which was due to take place in late December.

The gang which I believe will be most affected by this closure will be the regular Wednesday afternoon contingent as we have had numbers in the fifties taking part on some occasions. Meanwhile at the last session two groups of doubles battled it out and the clear black jack winners were Ken Karran and Peter Clague; next were Joanne Smith and Victor Corlett; with third going to Rita Callister and Jean Thackrah.

If there was such a thing as predictable winners then the yellow’s had them, with the pairing of Margaret Tasker and Stuart Garrett; although there was probably no tea for Stuey when he got home as he beat wife Paula and her partner Bernard Thackrah into second; taking third spot were Tricia Bull and Ken Radcliffe.

Outdoor Winter League Bowling Club – Report 8 (29 November)

By Steve Moore

A now all too familiar pattern took place in the Manx Petroleum sponsored Outdoor Winter League Bowling Club with just one day’s play being possible due to rain for the third successive weekend and resulted in Sunday’s matches being called off for a second time, having been re-scheduled from two weeks previous.

Two of the leading sides were first into action on a sunny Saturday afternoon and after some close contests with all players reaching double figures; it was Chancers (third) who came out on top, dropping just three points against Louie’s Angels, who were in second place on average. Tricia Bull was the Angels only success, and for Chancers the leading player was Alan Moore.

The Chancers recorded a similar high score in their next outing when they took on Bits ‘n’ Bobs for whom Geoff Mayles was their only winner, while top performer for the victors was Steve Moore.

The final encounter of the afternoon saw the Angels also repeat their score from earlier, while Bits ‘n’ Bobs did well enough in their two wins to help them finish level on points at 70 each. Tom Wilson (Bits) and Ken Karran (Angels) were the leading players.

Results for Saturday 28 November: Louie’s Angels (1) 70, Chancers (5) 87; Chancers (5) 87, Bits ‘n’ Bobs (1) 61; Bits ‘n’ Bobs (2) 70, Louie’s Angels (4) 70.

No date has been set for the third attempt at Sunday’s fixtures and with no free days in the near future, a decision will be taken nearer Christmas; meanwhile just two teams are averaging over 80 points an outing, with Angry Mob out in front ahead of Chancers, then Castletown Corkers, followed by Louie’s Angels.

The midweek round robin session attracted 30 players and started in dry conditions but was adjourned for a short heavy shower of rain. Triples were the order of the day and Tricia Bull, Roma Ware and Sean Cade won the yellow group ahead of Louis Callister, Les Halsall and Ray Kelly.

The black jack section saw Peter Clague, Peter Daugherty and Steve Moore triumph after a roll-up decider, just beating Margaret Tasker, Rita Callister and Roland Hamley.

Outdoor Winter League Bowling Club – Report 7 (22 November)

By Steve Moore

The Manx Petroleum sponsored Outdoor Winter League Bowling Club lost another session due to heavy rain on Saturday, but were a bit luckier the following day when they took the decision to go ahead and it saw three of the top teams record some interesting results.

There was just a three point difference in favour of Parkers when they recorded the highest score of the afternoon against Castletown Corkers, who had the consolation of dropping just 10 points themselves, with all the losers reaching double figures. The two with the best wins were Paul Bailey (Parkers) and John Saunders (Corkers).

In the second clash the Corkers came out on top against Seven Up in another close contest, which saw both sides drop valuable points. 70-65 was the final outcome and the leading players were Val Macfarlane and Derek Lewney (Corkers), along with Kevin Quirk (Seven Up).

The final fixture of the day saw the third different winners, Seven Up leaving their opponents Parkers now with the lowest score from what can only be described as a difficult session. Roy Murphy (Seven Up) and Mike Thomas (Parkers) both won to single figures.

Results for Sunday 22 November: Parkers 83 (4), Castletown Corkers 80 (2); Corkers 70 (4), Seven Up 65 (2); Seven Up 76 (4), Parkers 60 (2).

Re-arranged dates for recent postponements are as follows: Sunday 29 November – Castletown Corkers v Louie’s Angels, Angels v Angry Mob, Angry Mob v Corkers; Sunday 20 December – Castletown Cannons v Erin Porters, Outsiders v Govags, Porters v Outsiders, Govags v Cannons. Unfortunately this means that there will be no round robins on these dates.

Last week’s midweek round robin saw 28 entrants brave the elements and were split into two group of doubles. The girls triumphed in the yellow section with Philippa Fletcher and Rita Callister winning ahead of two Geoff’s – Osborn and Mayles; with third spot going to Dave Turner and Les Halsall.

Coming out on top in the black jack gang were Stuart Garrett and John Watters; in second place it was Peter Clague and Margaret Tasker, just ahead of Paula Garrett and Derek Clarke.

Outdoor Winter League Bowling Club – Report 6 (15 November)

By Steve Moore

Once again the Manx Petroleum sponsored Outdoor Winter League Bowling Club programme was a victim of the wet weather along with most other sports on Saturday; but the following day’s play went ahead and it was Bits ‘n’ Bobs who left with the biggest haul of points.

Parkers were undefeated and averaging over 80 points an outing but came unstuck against the Chancers, winning just one game on their way to their lowest score of 58. Top performances came from two players who made it a double for the day – Paul Bailey (Parkers) and Stuart Garrett (Chancers).

Unleashing a couple of secret weapons Bits ‘n’ Bobs notched up an 86-64 victory over Beachcombers, a great improvement remembering they only registered 70 points from two fixtures last time they played. Leading players were Tom Lord and Heather Horsburgh (Beachcombers) and Trevor Quayle (Bits ‘n’ Bobs).

In what I see as the most open season yet, Chancers then dropped 22 points when they took on Beachcombers, who themselves only reached 46. Romping to victories, were Stuart Garrett who incidentally only conceded two points all day, and for Beachcombers it was super-sub Ray Hardman and Lil Smith.

The final encounter produced the closest finish to date, three-all on games and a four point difference in favour of Parkers against Bits ‘n’ Bobs. Tom Wilson was the leading player for Bits and for their opponents it was Paul Bailey once again.

Results for Sunday 15 November: Parkers 58 (1), Chancers 82 (5); Beachcombers 64 (2), Bits ‘n’ Bobs 86 (4); Chancers 68 (4), Beachcombers 46 (2); Bits ‘n’ Bobs 75 (3), Parkers 79 (3).

A provisional date for the postponed fixtures is Sunday 29 November.

A first took place at the midweek round robin with the introduction of a third colour on the jacks front and this helped enormously with the 51 contestants being split into triples. Storming away with the red section were Stuart Garrett, Frances Kennish and Tricia Bull, with the runners-up being Louis Callister, Val Macfarlane and June Flanagan.

The blacks also had clear-cut winners with Margaret Tasker, John Watters and Ken Radcliffe taking the group ahead of Doug Macfarlane, Victor Corlett and Tiny Wrigley. While in the yellows a roll-up decided things in favour of Mike Thomas, Wendy Cowin and John Marsden; just missing out were Mike and Roma Ware, along with John Lightfoot.

Outdoor Winter League Bowling Club – Report 6 (08 November)

By Steve Moore

Two quite different days greeted the teams over the weekend in the Manx Petroleum Outdoor Winter League Bowling Club, heavy showers on day one and glorious sunshine 24 hours later. As things stand this leaves Angry Mob with a 25 point advantage, with just them and the Parkers averaging over 80.

Three teams were in action at both sessions; first into the fray were Chancers and Erin Porters, league champions versus newcomers. Experience came through in the end but the losers did win two games. Harry Minor was the leading player for Erin Porters, while for Chancers it was Ian Moore.

The Porters then went straight back into action against Govags and even though they scored more points, it was the western side who came out on top. Best performances came from Mavis Franks (Porters) and Phil Parker for Govags.

With the surface now showing the effects of the heavy rain, the last fixture of the day was settled in favour of the Chancers when they beat Govags by five games to one. Paula Garrett was the leading player for the winners, while Jack Lee upheld the Govags honour.

Results for Saturday 7 November: Chancers 78 (4), Erin Porters 53 (2); Erin Porters 68 (2), Govags 77 (4); Govags 49 (1), Chancers 82 (5).

Sunday’s bowling, which was re-scheduled from the previous weekend, saw some very interesting outcomes. Firstly Castletown Corkers were pushed all the way by Beachcombers, who eventually missed out by just five points; then Seven Up produced another score over 80 whilst beating Beachcombers; this before going down to a heavy first defeat of the season against Castletown Corkers.

Top performers in game order were Val Macfarlane and Bob Clark (Corkers), Lil Smith (Beachcombers); Shirley Whelan (Beachcombers), Ken Williams (Seven Up); Kevin Quirk (Seven Up), Derek Lewney and Jenny Saunders (Corkers).

Results for Sunday 8 November: Castletown Corkers 78 (3), Beachcombers 73 (3); Beachcombers 59 (1), Seven Up 82 (5); Seven Up 57 (2), Corkers 81 (4).

The threat of some rain affected the midweek round robin entry but an enthusiastic 39 took part in two sets of triples. The yellow jack group was won by Mike Ware, Peter Saunders and Derek Clarke; just one point ahead of Tricia Bull, Joanne Smith and Shirley Whelan. Third spot went to Louis Callister, Derek Land and Ken Karran.

The top two in the black section were also separated by just one point in favour of Margaret Tasker, Roma Ware and John Marsden, beating Stuey Garrett, Pat Dacre and John Lightfoot. Taking third place were Peter Wallis, Les Halsall and Ken Radcliffe.

Outdoor Winter League Bowling Club – Report 5 (01 November)

By Steve Moore

Just one of last weekend’s sessions survived the atrocious wet weather, as Sunday’s fixtures in the Manx Petroleum Outdoor Winter League Bowling Club were re-scheduled, while the day before another maximum was recorded as two teams averaged over 80 points apiece for the afternoon.

First encounter off the green saw Louie’s Angels inflict an 82-65 points defeat on Castletown Cannons and equal their best score to date. Leading performances came from Margaret Tasker (Angels) and Jordan Drewett (Cannons).

The Outsiders next took three games against Angry Mob and although losing out, they restricted them to 72 points in the process. Performing best were Eileen Killey, and Edward Trustham for the victors.

Louie’s Angels then put in another 80 plus score and left their opponents Outsiders with just one player reaching double figures. Matthew Keggen was the Angels leading player and the sole winner for Outsiders was Ken Clarke.

Keeping up their record of scoring a maximum win each weekend they have played were Angry Mob, with their latest victims being Castletown Cannons. Dave Thomas was best for the winners with Hannah Kermode just missing out on 13 for the Cannons.

Results for Saturday 31 October: Castletown Cannons 65 (2), Louie’s Angels 82 (4); Outsiders 62 (3), Angry Mob 72 (3); Louie’s Angels 81 (5), Outsiders 53 (1); Angry Mob 90 (6), Cannons 55 (0).

Once again the midweek round robin was lucky with the weather and a fantastic entry of 52 brought some new complications for the organisers. Two groups of triples and one doubles took to the green and resulted in the pairing of Cath Parker and Tricia Bull winning their section ahead of Joanne Smith and Victor Corlett.

The black jack triples were won by Rita Callister, Roma Ware and Edward Trustham; runners-up were Peter Clague, Dave Comish and Ken Karran. Finally in the yellow triples, success went to Peter Wallis, Stuey Garrett and Shirley Whelan, closely followed by Sheila Durcan, Ann Oates and Barbara Kennaugh.

Weather permitting last weekend’s washed out fixtures will take place this Sunday (November 8).

Outdoor Winter League Bowling Club – Report 4 (25 October)

By Steve Moore

With strong winds and spells of heavy rain it was a relief for the organisers to get another weekend of the Manx Petroleum Outdoor Winter League Bowling Club concluded in dry, very windy conditions, and another four maximum wins into the bargain.

Just three sides took part in Saturday’s programme with the opening fixture seeing the Chancers record a close seven points success over Angry Mob. This was followed by the ‘Mob’ bouncing back with a massive 58 point difference victory over Bits ‘n’ Bobs; who unfortunately didn’t fare much better when they took on Chancers and went home with just 70 points from the afternoon.

Top performances came from Gill Dixon twice for Chancers, Dave Thomas and Ben Dugdale (Angry Mob) and for Bits ‘n’ Bobs it was John Watters and Dave Comish.

Results for Saturday 24 October: Chancers 79 (5), Angry Mob 72 (1); Angry Mob 90 (6), Bits ‘n’ Bobs 32 (0); Bits ‘n’ Bobs 38 (0), Chancers 90 (6).

No trouble finding their way to the green on Sunday, Erin Porters put in a much-improved display and recorded a respectable 125 points over their two outings. First taking two games off the Parkers, before going down in their next, with two thirteens and a fourteen on the card.

But the star team of the weekend were Beachcombers after they notched up two maximum wins and beat the Govags to a low score of just 45 in the process. Although the western side did put up a better performance second time out, when they lost out by only eight points to Parkers.

Enjoying their games most for the Porters were Bernard Thackrah and Harry Minor; for Parkers it was Paul Bailey and Joanne Smith; twice for Govags it was Kevin Mort and for the high flying Beachcombers, Heather Horsburgh, Tom Lord and Lil Smith.

Results for Sunday 25 October: Parkers 79 (4), Erin Porters 63 (2); Beachcombers 90 (6), Govags 45 (0); Erin Porters 62 (0), Beachcombers 90 (6); Govags 70 (3), Parkers 78 (3).

A great entry of 48 took to the green for the midweek round robin last week and they were split into three gangs of triples. Romping away with their group were Louis Callister, John Lightfoot and Ray Kelly, with second going to Dave Comish, Val Macfarlane and Derek Clarke.

The other sections had play-offs to decide the leading two, in the blacks it was Edward Trustham, Sheila Durcan and John Blindell who came out on top, just beating Stuey Garrett, Dave Galbraith and Philomena Dobson. The other successful trio were Margaret Tasker, Peter Clague and Jean Thackrah and taking second, Paula Garrett, Phil Parker and Mary Cringle.

Outdoor Winter League Bowling Club – Report 3 (18 October)

By Steve Moore

A full weekend of bowls was possible for the first time this season as the last four teams made their entrance into the Manx Petroleum Outdoor Winter League Bowling Club and with that came a maximum score from a side who I believe will be challenging for the league title come next spring.

Opening Saturday’s action were Louie’s Angels and league newcomers Erin Porters, with the latter having players who had probably never seen Nobles No 3 green, never mind played on it and unfortunately the outcome reflected this. The Angels dropped just eight points, with Tricia Bull and Rita Callister leading the way, along with Porters captain Bernard Thackrah.

Games went much to form thereafter with Angry Mob, formerly Mix ‘n’ Match, recording the highest score to date with an 89 against Govags; before upping the mark in their next outing with a maximum 90 points from their game with Erin Porters. The final encounter of the session saw Louie’s Angels overcome Govags by four games to two.

Top players in those three fixtures were Dave, and father Nigel Thomas (Angry Mob); Les Halsall and Jack Lee (Govags); along with Ken Karran (Angels) and Ed Benson (Porters).

Results for Saturday 17 October: Louie’s Angels 82 (5), Erin Porters 46 (1); Angry Mob 83 (5), Govags 52 (1); Erin Porters 41 (0), Angry Mob 90 (6); Govags 57 (2), Louie’s Angels 73 (4).

Sunday’s programme was once again a little bit one-sided as some players struggled to cope with a tricky green and the results ended with two eighty-nines on the cards followed by another maximum.

It was an all Castletown affair in game number 13 which saw the Corkers drop just one point against an under strength Cannons. Playing at the same time, Seven Up came off with the same score from their clash with Outsiders who also had to call upon a reserve list of players to make up their numbers.

Summer team-mates for Castletown - Hilary Kermode (Cannons) and Jenny Saunders (Corkers) led the way, as did Derek Clarke (Outsiders) and Ken Williams (Seven Up).

No slip ups in their next outing for Corkers when they scored a full house against an Outsiders team that averaged less than eight points per player. Putting up the best fight was Eileen Killey, whilst for the victors it was Andy Clark.

Last fixture of the day saw the winners Seven Up live up to their name with a seventy-seven when they took on a Cannons side for who junior Jordan Drewett was the top performer, and for Sevens it was Kevin Quirk.

Results for Sunday 18 October: Castletown Cannons 65 (1), Castletown Corkers 89 (5); Outsiders 57 (1), Seven Up 89 (5); Corkers 90 (6), Outsiders 47 (0); Seven Up 77 (4), Cannons 58 (2).

Last week’s round robin session attracted a good entry of 42 which was split into three groups. Success in the doubles went to Paula Garrett and Margaret Tasker followed by Ken Karran and Mary Cringle.

The remainder played in triples and in the black jack section the winners were Tom Wilson, Bernard Thackrah and Tricia Bull; next came Stuey Garrett, Heather Horsburgh and Philomena Dobson. Finally the yellow triples saw Ann Oates, Maureen Trustham and Ken Williams just beat John Lightfoot, Louis Callister and Susan Pickard.

Outdoor Winter League Bowling Club – Report 2 (11 October)

By Steve Moore

Just one day of play was possible last weekend in the Manx Petroleum Outdoor Winter League Bowling Club due to a charity event taking place in Noble’s Park and with last season’s top three teams in action it was a chance for one of them to take an early advantage.

First blood went to the champions, now calling themselves Chancers, dropping just seven points against Castletown Corkers for whom Bob Clark was their only winner when they struggled to score just 48. Phil Kerruish being top player for the victors.

Seven Up then got their campaign underway with a four games to two success over Bits ‘n’ Bobs which saw them rack up 79 points. Kevin Quirk was best for the Sevens and for their opponents it was Tom Wilson.

They then kept their good start going with victory over the Chancers and another score close to 80, therefore taking that early advantage over their challengers. Leading the way were Gill Dixon (Chancers) and Alec Taylor for Seven Up.

Not having things their own way, Castletown Corkers were then held to a share of the games against Bits ‘n’ Bobs, but recorded a 19 point difference helped by Bob Clark being their top player once again. Tom Wilson also performed best for the second time, along with Mike Ware.

Results for Saturday 10 October: Castletown Corkers 48 (1), Chancers 83 (5); Seven Up 79 (4), Bits ‘n’ Bobs 54 (2); Chancers 65 (2), Seven Up 77 (4); Bits ‘n’ Bobs 59 (3), Corkers 78 (3).

All team captains are reminded that they must be in attendance to make the relevant draws for their games at 12.45 pm ahead of a one o’clock start; this will become even more important once the dark evenings arrive much earlier. Also that teams must do their own measuring when required.

The first midweek round robin saw an entry of 34 made up with some welcome new faces to the Club and were split into two groups. Taking the triples with probably one of the highest scores ever, were Stuey Garrett, Mike Thomas and Heather Horsburgh; second came Molly Coppell, Tom Wilson and Jane Teare, with third place going to Geoff Osborn, Sue Pickard and Peter Daugherty.

Things were much tighter in the doubles with the two Johns – Lightfoot and Watters – coming out ahead of Terry Moore and Ken Karran; third spot going to Bert Quayle and Mary Simmonds.

Outdoor Winter League Bowling Club – Report 1 (03 October)

The Manx Petroleum Outdoor Winter League Bowling Club commenced its ninth season in glorious weather at the weekend with the Parkers dropping just 11 points with two scores over 80.

Game number one produced a five games to one success for the Parkers, for whom Brian Woodall was top performer, whilst for their opponents Castletown Cannons, that honour went to their only winner Hannah Kermode.

Next result saw a 10 point advantage for Beachcombers from their clash with Outsiders (formerly Onchanites) which ended three-all on games. Lil Smith for the victors and Philippa Fletcher were the leading players.

Paired up for the next encounter were the Parkers and Outsiders and while the losers improved on their first score, it was a double winning start for Parkers, with captain Mike Thomas leading the way along with Pat Dacre.

Just four points separated the sides at the end of the last fixture with Castletown Cannons winning four of the six games against Beachcombers. On a good day for the ladies, Heather Horsburgh was top scorer along with Sue Peach and Hannah Kermode once again, for the Cannons.

Results for Sunday 4 October: Castletown Cannons 63 (1), The Parkers 87 (5); The Outsiders 67 (3), Beachcombers 77 (3); The Parkers 82 (4), The Outsiders 72 (2); Beachcombers 73 (2), Castletown Cannons 77 (4).

A small band of players took part in a round robin last Saturday, with another competition taking place elsewhere, 21 players took to the green in a triples session. Winners were John Lightfoot, Philippa Fletcher and Alan Moore ahead of Ray Kelly, Dave Comish and Bert Quayle; while third place went to Ken Karran, Derek Clarke and Pat Dacre.

A change to this weekend’s schedule has been forced on the Club, to avoid a clash in Nobles Park with a Guiness World Record charity event that is taking place. Saturday’s fixtures will go ahead as planned, but Sunday’s play has been moved to the following Saturday (17 October).

Manx Petroleums Outdoor Winter League Bowling Club Best v Rest - Week ending 29 March 2009

By Steve Moore

The final day’s play took place in the Manx Petroleums Outdoor Winter League Bowling Club on Sunday as they enjoyed sunshine with a cool breeze on the first afternoon of summer that saw the annual Best v Rest event followed by the prize presentations.

The Best side consisted of league champions Hot Shots, the club champion and the three merit winners; their opponents the Rest, being merit winners from the remaining 11 teams.

Things started well for the Rest, winning the opening three clashes, but then their opponents found their form and after ten games it was all level at 5-5 apiece and a points difference of just six in favour of the Rest, but in the final encounter of the season a 15-4 win gave the Best a close victory.

Scores (Best team first): Steve Moore (Hot Shots) 9, Paul Bailey (Parkers) 15; Dave Thomas (merit) 12, Jack Lee (Govags) 15; Stuey Garrett (HS) 9, Hannah Kermode (Cannons) 15; Kevin Quirk (club champion) 15, Andy Clark (Corkers) 13; Phil Kerruish (HS) 15, John Watters (Bits ‘n’ Bobs) 12; Ian Moore (HS) 15, Sean Cade (Rejects) 14; Trish Bull (ladies merit) 11, Ray Watterson (Seven Up) 15; Alan Moore (HS) 15, Rita Callister (Angels) 8; Ben Dugdale (junior merit) 10, Paula Firth (Onchanites) 15; John Kennish (HS) 15, Tony Dugdale (Mix ‘n’ Match) 10; Jenny Moore (HS) 15, Lil Smith (Beachcombers) 4. Best 141 (6), Rest 136 (5).

A large crowd had gathered to watch the action and see the prizes awarded to the various recipients by Jen Clucas from league sponsors Manx Petroleums. Also each of the merit winners received vouchers kindly donated by Newson Trading Company.

The final midweek round robin saw 26 entrants compete in two sections of doubles, Trish Bull and Peter Karran winning the yellow jacks ahead of Louis Callister and Stuey Garrett; while in the other group Bert Quayle and Geoff Osborn were comfortable winners, with Mary Simmonds and Peter Clague runners-up.

A round robin was also held on Saturday, when 19 took part on another blustery afternoon, in the triples Trish Bull, Alan Moore and Peter Karran topped their group ahead of Geoff Mayles, Peter Clague and Steve Moore; while winners in the doubles section were Geoff Osborn and Roy Murphy and second went to Joanne Smith and Derek Clarke.

At the conclusion of the season thanks are expressed to Douglas Corporation staff who kept the green playable in difficult conditions and anyone who helped, especially at Sunday’s event.

Manx Petroleums Outdoor Winter League Bowling Club Championship - Week ending 22 March 2009

By Steve Moore

With such a large number of entries it was decided to hold the Club Championship in the Manx Petroleums Outdoor Winter League Bowling Club over both days last weekend and with the playing surface running much better in the dry weather, some exciting contests took place.

After convincingly defeating last year’s champion in his opener, Kevin Quirk (Seven Up) never really looked in trouble as he took the title for the fourth time; overcoming his opponent Stuey Garrett (Hot Shots) 15-11 in the final.

In the semi finals Kevin had to survive a great fight back by team-mate Ray Watterson, leading 13-4 before eventually winning 15-11; Ray having come through his previous three games after being behind close to the finish. In the other encounter junior member Bob Clark (Castletown Corkers) put up an excellent performance before going down on 14 after trailing 7-12. Losing quarter finalists were Jenny Moore, Ian Moore, Trish Bull and Lil Smith.

The line up for this Sunday’s Best v Rest competition consists of the Hot Shots ‘Best’ team plus Kevin Quirk; overall merit winner, Dave Thomas; ladies winner, Trish Bull and junior boys winner, Ben Dugdale; they will play the ‘Rest’ team consisting of team individual merit winners – Andy Clark (Corkers), Ray Watterson (Seven Up), Tony Dugdale (Mix 'n' Match), Hannah Kermode (Cannons), Rita Callister (Angels), Mike Thomas (Parkers), Paula Firth (Onchanites), Jack Lee (Govags), Lil Smith (Beachcombers), John Watters (Bits 'n' Bobs) and Sean Cade (Rejects). The day’s events start at 1pm, with prize presentations and a raffle after the games. Any raffle prizes would be very much appreciated.

The top 25 players in the final merit standings are: 1. Dave Thomas (Mix 'n' Match) 320 pts; 2. Tony Dugdale (Mix) 317; 3. Trish Bull (Angels) 312; 4. Kevin Quirk (Seven Up) 310; 5. Ian Moore (Hot Shots) 307; 6. Stuey Garrett (Hot Shots) 303; 7. Ray Watterson (Seven Up) 300; 8. Andy Clark (C.Corkers) 299; 9. Ben Dugdale (Mix) 299; 10. Derek Lewney (Corkers) 292; 11. Alec Taylor (Seven Up) 285; 12. Jack Lee (Govags) 282; 13. Roy Murphy (Seven Up) 278; 14. John Saunders (Corkers) 260; 15. Mike Thomas (Parkers) 255; 16. Paul Bailey (Parkers) 252; 17. Margaret Tasker (Angels) 249; 18. Alan Moore (Hot Shots) 247; 19. John Kennish (Hot Shots) 246; 20. Bob Clark (Corkers) 245; 21. Bert Quayle (Govags) 244; 22. Paula Firth (Onchanites) 242; 23. Geoff Osborn (Seven Up) 242; 24. Phil Kerruish (Hot Shots) 240: 25. Jenny Moore (Hot Shots) 239. A full list can be seen in the clubhouse at Nobles No. 3 green. Thanks are expressed to Newson Trading for once again sponsoring this competition.

Looking back at the conclusion of league fixtures the previous weekend, while Hot Shots retained the title previously won when they were called Generation Gap, behind them Castletown Corkers finished in second spot for the sixth time in seven years having been victorious in the very first season. The top five finishers all scored more points than 2008 with the biggest improvement coming from Castletown Cannons who recorded almost five points more per game.

Catching up on the midweek round robins, 12 different players made up the teams of triples winners over two weeks. Firstly from 27 entrants Stuey Garrett, Margaret Tasker and Terry Moore won the yellow jack section, while Derek Clarke, Lynda Clarke and Joanne Smith took the black group. Then the following week 33 took part, with Paula Garrett, Rita Callister and Mary Simmonds showing girl power to take one section; with Roy Murphy, Les Halsall and Dave Comish proving that they can still play a little bit to triumph in the other.

This Saturday hopefully sees the last round robin of the winter season, then on Sunday why not come along and support your team’s merit winner in the Best v Rest, both days starting at 1pm.

Manx Petroleums Outdoor Winter League Bowling Club - Week ending 08 March 2009

By Steve Moore

With Saturday’s fixtures being washed out it was fingers crossed that the following day’s programme in the Manx Petroleums Outdoor Winter League Bowling Club would not also fall foul of the weather, but the strong winds helped dry out the playing surface and enable four teams to complete their campaign.

Sunday was also a chance for the outcome of the Derek Killey memorial merit cup to be decided and there were no surprises as long time leader Dave Thomas (Mix ‘n’ Match) took maximum points to beat team-mate Tony Dugdale by a margin of three and take the title to become the eighth different winner.

With league positions to play for the Parkers tried their best to overcome the small deficit between them and Louie’s Angels but missed out by just six points, whilst the Angels in turn must wait to see if Castletown Cannons can bridge the 127 point gap and move back above them into fifth spot.

Another team now awaiting results after Saturday’s postponements are Mix ‘n’ Match, they are 153 points ahead of Seven Up after first recording 80 against the Angels; then posting a full house when they played Onchanites. Seven Up must do better than their average of 75.5 to secure that third spot. Top performers were Dave Thomas and Steve Cook (Mix); for their opponents Trish Bull (Angels) and with two all-buts for Onchanites, Erwin Gelling and Shirley Fargher.

One of the afternoon’s fixtures had an unusual outcome when Onchanites won 4-2 on games but lost out on the all important points front with the Parkers beating them 76 to 66. Leading the way were Mike Thomas (Parkers) and Derek Clarke.

The Parkers then also had two players who fell just one point short when they missed out on a maximum win against Louie’s Angels; Trish Bull and Trevor Quayle took the close victories and for Parkers the best player was Paul Bailey.

Results for Sunday March 8: Mix ‘n’ Match 80 (5), Louie’s Angels 58 (1); Parkers 76 (2), Onchanites 66 (4); Louie’s Angels 64 (2), Parkers 88 (4); Onchanites 56 (0), Mix ‘n’ Match 90 (6).

Unfortunately last week’s round robin session succumbed to the previous night’s snow, while the new date for last weekend’s postponed fixtures will be Sunday March 15 and therefore cancelling out any chance of a round robin for that day; this will also be the final opportunity to register for the Club Championship which will be held a week later.

Manx Petroleums Outdoor Winter League Bowling Club - Week ending 01 March 2009

By Steve Moore

All teams are left with just two games to play after Saturday’s action in the Manx Petroleums Outdoor Winter League Bowling Club and there are still a number of important league positions to be decided over the next few weekends.

After struggling on their last visit, league leaders the Hot Shots needed a better session to put as much space as possible between themselves and their closest rivals and they opened with an 80 point score against Louie’s Angels who were trying to move back up into fifth spot. Trevor Quayle (Angels) and Stuey Garrett were the top performers.

The Onchanites also needed a good afternoon to put some pressure on the Parkers who are one place above them, but they only scored 63 in a three-all game against Beachcombers who are two positions below them. Leading the way was Bernard Kaighen for the victors and for Onchanites, Paula Firth and Flo Kelly.

Hot Shots hold a 39 point advantage at the top of the table after just missing out on a maximum win against Onchanites who now have a tough task to make any headway up the league. David Turner survived an all-but game to be the Onchanites only winner, while for their opponents Alan Moore was top scorer.

Louie’s Angels then recorded their best score of the season, dropping just three points in a four games to two victory over Beachcombers, to move ahead of Castletown Cannons by just five points and showed some of their form from early in the campaign. Top players for the second time were Bernard Kaighen and Trevor Quayle.

Results for Saturday February 28: Louie’s Angels 65 (2), Hot Shots 80 (4); Onchanites 63 (3), Beachcombers 79 (3); Hot Shots 89 (5), Onchanites 52 (1); Beachcombers 69 (2), Louie’s Angels 87 (4).

Another of the individual merit awards was decided at the weekend, with Trish Bull (Louie’s Angels) winning the ladies section, now being 32 points ahead of her nearest rival, team-mate Margaret Tasker, with just 30 left available.

There are still some close battles further down the list and I am sure Trish hasn’t given up on the overall award, now into third spot and yet to play the team which includes Dave Thomas and Tony Dugdale who are just above. In the junior girls category Casey Bolton (Rejects) is in pole position with a two point lead.

Merit (top 10): Dave Thomas (Mix ‘n’ Match) 290 pts; Tony Dugdale 287; Trish Bull 282; Kevin Quirk (Seven Up) 281; Andy Clark (Corkers) 281; Ian Moore (Hot Shots) 279; Stuey Garrett (Hot Shots) 273; Ray Watterson (Seven Up) 272; Ben Dugdale (Mix ‘n’ Match) 269; Derek Lewney (Corkers) 262.

League positions (all played 20 games): Hot Shots 1650 pts; Castletown Corkers 1611; Seven Up 1510; Mix ‘n’ Match 1493; Louie’s Angels 1430; Castletown Cannons 1425; Parkers 1382; Onchanites 1358; Govags 1304; Beachcombers 1231; Bits ‘n’ Bobs 1135; Rejects 1106.

Last Wednesday’s round robin attracted an entry of 32 which was split into triples and doubles. Joanne Smith, Flo Kelly and Peter Clague triumphed in their section while the other group saw Jack Lee and Ken Clarke come out on top with a four pairing roll-up to settle second spot.

With the league fixtures on schedule, Sunday also saw an opportunity to stage a round robin and a gang on 20 competitors were split into two sections of doubles. The black jack winners were Alan Moore and Peter Daugherty, with Peter Karran and Lil Smith top of the yellow group.

Manx Petroleums Outdoor Winter League Bowling Club - Week ending 22 February 2009

By Steve Moore

Some low scores were the main feature of Saturday’s play in the Manx Petroleums Outdoor Winter League Bowling Club with just one result over 80; then the following day Seven Up blew any chance they had of taking second position and could well lose third place with an advantage of just 17 points going into their final weekend.

As we head towards the final month of the Club there are a number of issues still to be decided in the league table; the battle at the top of course and also a close contest lower down as teams swop places each time they play.

On Saturday it was the turn of Louie’s Angels to move up when they scored 160 points from two victories; firstly beating the Govags, then Rejects. Team captain Louis Callister led from the front in both outings, while for Govags at was Les Halsall and for Rejects, Keith Watterson.

Onchanites also inflicted defeats on their two opposing teams to move onto the same average points as the Parkers who are one place above them having played more games. Paula Firth was their leading player in both games, along with Sid Bolton (Rejects) and Ray Kelly (Govags).

Results for Saturday February 21: Louie’s Angels 83 (5), Govags 61 (1); Onchanites 76 (4), Rejects 55 (2); Govags 67 (3), Onchanites 78 (3); Rejects 55 (1), Louie’s Angels 77 (5).

Sunday was another fine dry day and saw no less than five layers lose out by just one point in some close games, but there were also some low scores recorded, with the afternoon’s biggest benefactors being the Castletown teams.

First up the Cannons inflicted a surprise 19 point defeat on Seven Up before they jumped back into fifth place with a five games to one success over Bits ‘n’ Bobs. Peter Oates was their top performer in both fixtures, with Kevin Quirk (Seven Up) and Brian Lowe (Bits ‘n’ Bobs) also winning to single figures.

The Corkers began their afternoon with the weekend’s highest score, dropping just five points against Bits ‘n’ Bobs; they then won a close tussle with Seven Up to effectively leave the battle for the league title to be decided between themselves and Hot Shots. Derek Lewney and Dave Hollingworth (Corkers); John Watters (Bits ‘n’ Bobs) and Geoff Osborn (Seven Up) were the leading players.

One player missing from the Corkers line up was Bob Clark, so this makes Ben Dugdale (Mix ‘n’ Match) the winner of the junior section in the individual merit and with dropped points by Andy Clark, it leaves the overall merit outcome to be between Ben’s team-mates Dave Thomas and Tony Dugdale.

Results for Sunday February 22: Seven Up 59 (2), Castletown Cannons 78 (4); Bits ‘n’ Bobs 38 (1), Castletown Corkers 85 (5); Cannons 81 (5), Bits ‘n’ Bobs 58 (1); Corkers 81 (3), Seven Up 70 (3).

A busy green at last week’s round robin session with 39 entrants being split into two groups of triples. Winners in the black section were Paula Firth, Andy Hawkard and Ray Kelly, followed by Ken Karran, Flo Kelly and Ken Clarke, with third going to Margaret Tasker, Maurice O’Reilly and Mary Simmonds. The yellow jack victors were Louis Callister, Peter Clague and Mike Thomas; second went to Terry Moore, Brian Lowe and Dave Whalley; while in third it was Geoff Osborn, Philippa Fletcher and Brenda Hawkard.

Members are reminded that the end of season Club Championship entry form is at the green and weather permitting there will be a round robin held this Sunday at 1.00pm.

Individual Merit Table (Top 50) - Click Here

The weather played its part in the weekend’s play and possibly the outcome of both the individual merit and the league title in the Manx Petroleums Outdoor Winter League Bowling Club, firstly on Saturday the green was declared unplayable (having already had the midweek event cancelled); then the following day things went ahead after a morning inspection, but the surface remained very wet under foot.

These teams last met on the opening weekend of the season and saw the first maximum win of the campaign to Hot Shots, but they had no such fortune this time around picking up just 142 points and recording their lowest score to date. Instead it was the turn of two other sides to record their first maximum victories - the Parkers; then Mix ‘n’ Match, both against Beachcombers.

Having dropped more points than they care to remember by being short of players, Mix ‘n’ Match proved they can mix it with the top teams by once again holding the league leaders Hot Shots to a draw on games and just losing out in a fairly low scoring encounter. Dave Thomas (Mix ‘n’ Match) and Alan Moore were the leading players.

Pushing for a top six finish are the Parkers and they began their day in the best way possible with a full house against Beachcombers, winning three of their games to single figures. Top performers being Brian Woodall, just ahead of Peter Karran; while for their opponents it was Lil Smith and Ian Pendlebury.

The next fixture saw a spirited fight by the Parkers as they curtailed Hot Shots to their lowest score of the season, holding them to a draw on games and leaving them with only a 36 point advantage over their nearest rivals. John Kennish and Stuey Garrett led for the Hot Shots, while for the Parkers it was Paul Bailey.

Barring a big upset in their final weekend Mix ‘n’ Match should have done enough to secure fourth place in the league, helped by a six games to nil victory over a struggling Beachcombers team that is slipping close to the bottom two. Putting up the best fight was Maurice O’Reilly who missed out on all-but, and for the Mix it was Ben Dugdale.

Results for Sunday February 15: Mix ‘n’ Match 67 (3), Hot Shots 72 (3); Parkers 90 (6), Beachcombers 43 (0); Hot Shots 70 (3), Parkers 59 (3); Beachcombers 45 (0), Mix ‘n’ Match 90 (6).

Taking a look at the merit table as the league approaches its final few weekends and it shows three Mix ‘n’ Match players out in front albeit having played all but two of their fixtures, whereas some teams still have six to play.

Dave Thomas must be strong favourite to be the first recipient of the Derek Killey Memorial Cup, but he will be pushed all the way by team-mate Tony Dugdale who is now three points adrift after a defeat on Sunday. Hoping for a slip up is Andy Clark (Castletown Corkers), who lost to Dave just recently, as he can also close to within three points with two wins this weekend. I think it will take a major upset for any of the other contenders to take the cup, but there is still fierce competition for the other places.

Looking at the ladies section, Trish Bull (Louie’s Angels) has got a comfortable lead, ahead of Joanne Smith (Parkers), Margaret Tasker (Angels) and Jenny Moore (Hot Shots); while in the junior boys Ben Dugdale (third overall) is being pushed to the finish by Bob Clark (Corkers). Leading the junior girls is Shelley Kennish (Hot Shots).

League table (average points position in brackets): Mix ‘n’ Match 1493 (4); Hot Shots 1481 (1); Corkers 1445 (2); Parkers 1382 (7); Seven Up 1381 (3); Cannons 1266 (5); Govags 1176 (9); Louie’s Angels 1118 (6); Onchanites 1089 (8); Beachcombers 1083 (10); Bits ‘n’ Bobs 1039 (11); Rejects 996 (12).

Manx Petroleums Outdoor Winter League Bowling Club - Week ending 08 February 2009

By Steve Moore

As fixtures passed through the 100 mark on Saturday, Seven Up showed their intentions to push the teams above them all the way to the end in the Manx Petroleums Outdoor Winter League Bowling Club, then the following day second placed Castletown Corkers posted two maximum scores to ensure the destination of the league title could be just as close a finish as last year with the leading two clashing in the very last fixture.

Once again cold but dry as the weekend’s play kicked off with a comprehensive victory for Seven Up over a Louie’s Angels team now hanging on to sixth place, with the top players being Roy Murphy and Trish Bull for the Angels.

On at the same time were one of the sides chasing the Angels – Onchanites, but they began a fairly poor day for them by going down to bottom placed Bits ‘n’ Bobs. Shirley Fargher was their top player, as was Mike Ware for the victors.

Louie’s Angels faired much better in their second outing, dropping just seven points against Bits ‘n’ Bobs; Trish Bull was once again top scorer, while for their opponents it was Dave Comish.

Seven Up really had the bit between their teeth as they beat Onchanites 87 to 56 in fixture 100 and left the Onchan outfit with a 29 point deficit over the Angels with just four games left apiece. Once again Shirley Fargher top performed, while for Seven Up it was Ray Watterson.

Results for Saturday February 7: Seven Up 82 (5), Louie’s Angels 59 (1); Bits ‘n’ Bobs 73 (4), Onchanites 64 (2); Louie’s Angels 83 (4), Bits ‘n’ Bobs 56 (2); Onchanites 56 (1), Seven Up 87 (5).

Sunday’s weather was not so favourable as the predicted snow turned to rain and made a wet surface even more difficult to play on, but that didn’t upset the Castletown teams because apart from the two 6-0 wins for Corkers, the Cannons fired their way to another pair of scores of 80 and over to move into fifth place, having been down in ninth just before Christmas.

They dropped just two points against the Govags before going on to beat an out of sorts Rejects team who obviously struggled with the conditions. Phil Taubman and George Peach led the way against Govags, for whom Phil Parker was their only winner; Keith Watterson was the Rejects leading player and for Cannons second time out it was Hannah Kermode.

With probably one of the highest wins recorded Castletown Corkers overcame the Rejects with their second maximum win of the season before going on to take that tally to three against a Govags side that also clearly struggled to cope with the cold and wet weather. Meg Williams put up the best fight for Rejects, while for the Govags it was John Lightfoot; and for the winners Dave Hollingworth and Val Macfarlane.

Results for Sunday February 8: Castletown Cannons 88 (5), The Govags 56 (1); Castletown Corkers 90 (6), The Rejects 31 (0); Govags 46 (0), Corkers 90 (6); Rejects 44 (2), Cannons 80 (4).

31 entrants took part in last week’s round robin and they were separated into doubles and triples. A play-off decided the outcome of the doubles in favour of Terry Moore and Brian Lowe; just missing out were Joan Murphy and Louis Callister; while in third it was Ken Clarke and John Watters. The trio of Margaret Tasker, Shirley Fargher and Trish Bull were clear winners in their section, while second and third were also decided after a play-off; taking the runners-up spot were Geoff Mayles, Geoff Osborn and Peter Saunders, just ahead of Les Halsall, Rita Callister and Bert Quayle.

With the fixtures up to date it is planned to hold a round robin event this Saturday (February 14) 1.00pm start, weather permitting.

Manx Petroleums Outdoor Winter League Bowling Club - Week ending 01 February 2009

By Steve Moore

The action on the green was certainly hotter than the weather off it as the Manx Petroleums Outdoor Winter League Bowling Club came back on schedule with re-arranged fixtures on Saturday followed by Sunday’s games which included a clash between two of the top teams, all leaving the leaders with a 74 point advantage.

Recording two scores over 80 the Hot Shots continue on their quest to retain the title they won in 2008, their opening game was against Govags who scored just 52 points. Phil Kerruish and Bert Quayle (Govags) led the way.

Meanwhile showing what they can do with a full team, the Rejects had a four games to two success against Beachcombers to move out of bottom position. Top performers were Ian Pendlebury and Sid Bolton (Rejects).

Govags then notched up a ten point win over Beachcombers, while Hot Shots beat the Rejects. The leading players being Les Halsall (Govags); Shirley Whelan (Beachcombers); Sean Cade and Bob Berry (Rejects); Jenny Moore (Hot Shots).

Results for Saturday January 31: Hot Shots 83 (5), Govags 52 (1); Beachcombers 50 (2), Rejects 71 (4); Govags 79 (4), Beachcombers 69 (2); Rejects 56 (2), Hot Shots 82 (4).

Sunday’s wind was equally as cold as the previous day but it didn’t deter Mix ‘n’ Match who firstly defeated the Cannons then inflicted a second defeat of the season on Castletown Corkers. Ben Dugdale led from the front in both outings to maintain his lead at the head of the junior boys section of the league merit.

Good wins here also for the top two overall, Dave Thomas and Tony Dugdale.

The Parkers were the afternoon’s other side but suffered two losses at the hands of both Castletown teams, firstly going down to the Corkers, then having two high scoring losers against Cannons. The day’s other leading performers were Hannah Kermode and Phil Taubman (Cannons); John Saunders and Dave Hollingworth (Corkers); Paul Bailey and Terry Moore (Parkers).

Manx Petroleums Outdoor Winter League Bowling Club - Week ending 25 January 2009

By Steve Moore

Soft under foot was the verdict after a morning inspection ahead of Saturday’s play in the Manx Petroleums Outdoor Winter League Bowling Club, but the following day’s action succumbed to the heavy overnight rain and will now be played this coming Saturday.

Moving into third spot in the league table, Seven Up dropped just 12 points on an afternoon which saw all fixtures finish 5-1. But not a great session for some of the merit leaders, particularly those from Mix ‘n’ Match, Dave Thomas (1st) lost twice, while father and son Tony (3rd) and Ben Dugdale (9th) lost their opening games.

Unfortunately for them, the Mix team were once again a player short and paid heavily with their worst score to date against a Seven Up outfit who move above them in the overall standings. Top performers were Ray Watterson (Seven Up) and Steve Cook (Mix ‘n’ Match).

Also not being able to field a full side were Bits ‘n’ Bobs and they struggled against The Parkers.

Their sole winner was Brian Lowe, while for the victors that honour went to Terry Moore.

That morning decision to play was justified as the sun shone all afternoon as Mix ‘n’ Match ran out comfortable winners against Bits ‘n’ Bobs. The top players were Steve Cook once again and John Watters.

The Parkers couldn’t maintain their early form when they went down to Seven Up with Mike Thomas being the sole winner, while for their opponents Ray Watty completed a great session conceding just five points over the two games, but was beaten to the best player spot on this occasion by Arthur Ashcroft.

Results for Saturday January 24: Seven Up 83 (5), Mix ‘n’ Match 50 (1); Bits ‘n’ Bobs 42 (1), The Parkers 82 (5); Mix ‘n’ Match 74 (4), Bits ‘n’ Bobs 46 (1); The Parkers 41 (1), Seven Up 85 (5).

Last week’s round robin was played in two groups of doubles with the winners being Stuey Garrett and Trish Bull along with Margaret Tasker and Terry Moore; runners-up on the day were Andy Clarke and Dave Comish; Ray Kelly and Peter Karran.

Manx Petroleums Outdoor Winter League Bowling Club - Week ending 18 January 2009

By Steve Moore

With the weather deteriorating fast the race was on to get play finished as early as possible in the Manx Petroleums Outdoor Winter League Bowling Club on Saturday on a weekend with just one set of games taking all the teams to the 14 fixture mark.

Once again the action was a repeat of two weeks ago and fired up were Castletown Cannons who improved by 39 points, helped by their first maximum of the season when they beat  Louie’s Angels to what is possibly their lowest ever score. Obviously relishing taking on the captain’s role, Peter Oates was their best player, whilst for Angels it was Margaret Tasker.

Also improving their points total from two weeks previous were second placed Castletown Corkers, they opened with 88 against Onchanites; then recorded an 83 in a four games to two success over the Angels. Leading from the front were Andy Clark, twice for the Corkers, David Turner and Derek Clarke (Onchanites), along with Louis Callister (Angels).

In the day’s other clash, Cannons notched up enough points to move up one place in the table, beating Onchanites by just six and whilst the winds were getting ever stronger, we all beat the rain by approximately 10 minutes to make it back to our vehicles and head for home. Coping best with the conditions were Hannah Kermode (Cannons) and once again Derek Clarke.

Results for Saturday January 17: Louie’s Angels 49 (0), Castletown Cannons 90 (6); Onchanites 71 (2), Castletown Corkers 88 (4); Castletown Cannons 79 (3), Onchanites 73 (3); Castletown Corkers 83 (4), Louie’s Angels 53 (2).

Merit leaders (top 40) after 14 games: 1, Dave Thomas (Mix 'n' Match) 203; 2, Andy Clark (Castletown Corkers) 202; 3, Tony Dugdale (Mix) 200; 4, Ian Moore (Hot Shots) 197; 5, Kevin Quirk (Seven Up) 192; 6, Trish Bull (Louie's Angels) 192; 7, Ray Watterson (Seven Up) 191; 8, Stuey Garrett (Hot Shots) 190; 9, Ben Dugdale (Mix) 157; 10, Jack Lee (Govags) 187; 11, Alec Taylor (Seven Up) 185; 12, Bob Clark (Corkers) 182; 13, Derek Lewney (Corkers) 179; 14, Derek Clarke (Onchanites) 174; 15, Margaret Tasker (Angels) 171; 16, Roy Murphy (Seven Up) 166; 17, Les Halsall (Govags) 164; 18, Rita Callister (Angels) 162; 19, John Kennish (Hot Shots) 160; 20, Paula Firth (Onchanites) 160; 21, Bert Quayle (Govags) 158; 22, Paul Bailey (Parkers) 157; 23, John Lightfoot (Govags) 156; 24, Geoff Osborn (Seven Up) 156; 25, Sean Cade (Rejects) 153; 26, John Saunders (Corkers) 151; 27, Phil Kerruish (Hot Shots) 150; 28, Jenny Moore (Hot Shots) 145; 29, David Pease (Mix) 143; 30, Lil Smith (Beachcombers) 140; 31, Alan Moore (Hot Shots) 140; 32, Joanne Smith (Parkers) 140; 33, Peter Oates (Cannons) 138; 34, Ken Karran (Angels) 138; 35, John Watters (Bits 'n' Bobs) 137; 36, Nigel Thomas (Mix) 136; 37, Mike Thomas (Parkers) 135; 38, Louis Callister (Angels) 134; 39, Sid Bolton (Rejects) 134; 40, Mike Higgins (Parkers) 132.

League positions after 14 games: Hot Shots 1174; C’town Corkers 1111; Mix 'n' Match 1057; Seven Up 1044; Parkers 980; Louie's Angels 976; Onchanites 969; C’town Cannons 961; Govags 943; Beachcombers 876; Bits 'n' Bobs 822; Rejects 794.

With no league action scheduled on Sunday a few hardy characters took part in a triples round robin, playing each other twice in dry but breezy conditions. The winners were Trevor Quayle, Lil Smith and Alan Moore; with second going to Dave Comish, Steve Moore and Louis Callister.

An odd number of entrants meant last Wednesday’s round robin session was split into doubles and triples. Margaret Tasker, Dave Comish and Victor Corlett won the triples ahead of John Watters, Ray Kelly and Les Halsall; while in the other group, Derek Clarke and Peter Saunders won, with Louis and Rita Callister second.

Our best wishes go to two members of the Bits ’n’ Bobs team, Brian Keig, who was involved in an accident just recently; and their captain Tom Wilson who is recovering after an operation.

Manx Petroleums Outdoor Winter League Bowling Club - Week ending 11 January 2009

By Steve Moore

The weather played a part in proceedings in the Manx Petroleums Outdoor Winter League Bowling Club over the weekend with gale force winds making it a bit more difficult, both days being repeat fixtures of the last time these sides competed.

Saturday saw two teams missing players and with Mix ‘n’ Match hitting two possibles from the five they had available, they might regret those dropped 30 points, although they did maintain their average of 75.

First up for them were Govags, who recorded their highest score last time these two met, but could only manage 60 points on this occasion; then a depleted Rejects team limped to just 29 with only four players. Top performers were Nigel Thomas in both outings for Mix ‘n’ Match, Les Halsall (Govags) and Sean Cade (Rejects).

The Parkers meanwhile notched up the afternoon’s two highest scores, 86 against Rejects and 79 when they played Govags. Leading the way were Paul Bailey and Peter Kniveton for the victors, Sean Cade and Casey Bolton (Rejects) and obviously enjoying the conditions, Les Halsall.

Results for Saturday January 10: Mix ‘n’ Match 75 (5), Govags 60 (1); Parkers 86 (4), Rejects 45 (2); Govags 53 (1), Parkers 79 (5); Rejects 29 (0), Mix ‘n’ Match 75 (5).

Having just last week fought out an 81 points a piece draw, the battle between Seven Up and Hot Shots seemed on paper like another close contest with just one player change between the two teams, but the league leaders blew away their opponents with an advantage of 23. Leading performers were Phil Kerruish (Hot Shots) and Kevin Quirk (Seven Up).

On the green at the same time were Beachcombers recording their highest total of the campaign with an 81 against Bits ‘n’ Bobs, on the boil were Maurice O’Reilly and for Bits ‘n’ Bobs, John Watters.

With the weather deteriorating and two fixtures still to play the push was on to finish, but along came the rain to add to the wind and make the conditions much worse; but Hot Shots kept up their impressive form with their fifth maximum win, this time against an out of sorts Bits ‘n’ Bobs. Alan Moore was best for the victors and for the opposition it was Brian Keig.

Seven up improved in their second encounter of the afternoon as they beat Beachcombers with a 77-49 scoreline, the leading players being Ray Watterson (Seven Up) and Lil Smith.

Results for Sunday January 11: Seven Up 58 (1), Hot Shots 81 (5); Bits ‘n’ Bobs 53 (1), Beachcombers 81 (5); Hot Shots 90 (6), Bits ‘n’ Bobs 38 (0); Beachcombers 49 (1), Seven Up 77 (5).

On the first damp afternoon for a couple of weeks just 24 competitors took part in last week’s round robin, with all games played as doubles. The black section winners were Ken Radcliffe and Ken Karran, second were Louis Callister and Peter Kniveton, while third went to Terry Moore and Trish Bull. The black jack victors were Peter Clague and Derek Clarke just ahead of Rita Callister and Philippa Fletcher; in third it was Brian Lowe and Andy Clark.

The first fixtures of 2009 took the Manx Petroleums Outdoor Winter League Bowling Club past the halfway stage over the weekend and saw four of the leading five teams clash in two of the contests.

Saturday’s opener between Hot Shots (1st) and Seven Up (4th) ended with a fairly high 81 points apiece with all the players hitting double figures. Top performers were Stuey Garrett (Hot Shots) and Roy Murphy, inflicting the first defeat of the campaign on the merit leader.

Game 66 of the programme saw Bits ‘n’ Bobs notch up their second win with a six point advantage over Beachcombers and after a spirited performance later against Hot Shots they moved of the bottom of the table. Bob Talbot and Brian Keig were their star players, whilst for Beachcombers it was Shirley Whelan and for Hot Shots, Ian Moore.

The afternoon’s fourth result saw Seven Up repeat their earlier scoreline, but Beachcombers could only manage 62 points. Kevin Quirk was best for the winners and for their opponents it was Lil Smith.

Results for Saturday January 3: Hot Shots 81 (4), Seven Up 81 (2); Beachcombers 70 (3), Bits ‘n’ Bobs 76 (3); Seven Up 81 (4), Beachcombers 62 (2); Bits ‘n’ Bobs 65 (1), Hot Shots 84 (5).

The following day Louie’s Angels (5th) kicked off with an 84 against Castletown Cannons but were then beaten comprehensively by second placed Castletown Corkers, only scoring 57 points in the process.

Corkers having earlier won a close encounter against Onchanites, who themselves went on to record the weekend’s highest score in a five games to one success over the Cannons.

Top players were Sue Peach and Hannah Kermode (Cannons), Eileen Killey in both outings for Onchanites, Louis Callister and Trevor Quayle (Angels) and for Corkers, Dave Hollingworth and Val Macfarlane.

Results for Sunday January 4: Castletown Cannons 61 (1), Louie’s Angels 84 (5); Castletown Corkers 78 (2), Onchanites 73 (4); Louie’s Angels 57 (2), Castletown Corkers 83 (4); Onchanites 87 (5), Castletown Cannons 69 (1).

League positions after 12 games each: Hot Shots 1003 pts; Corkers 940; Seven Up 909; Mix ‘n’ Match 907; Louie’s Angels 874; Govags 830; Onchanites 825; Parkers 815; Cannons 792; Beachcombers 746; Bits ‘n’ Bobs 731; Rejects 720.

Two round robins were held over the festive period, the first saw 37 competitors take part and the triples were won by Roy Murphy, Geoff Mayles and Geoff Osborn, ahead of Lil Smith, Lynda Clarke and Steve Moore. In the doubles the victors were Ken Karran and Rita Callister, with second going to Peter Clague and Ray Watterson.

On New Year’s Eve 29 players participated, Ray Kelly and Alan Moore won the doubles, with the runners-up being Roy Murphy and Bert Quayle. In the triples Peter Clague, Victor Corlett and David Turner were victorious in a close contest ahead of Dave Comish, Lil Smith and Steve Moore.

Manx Petroleums Outdoor Winter League Bowling Club - Week ending 14 December

By Steve Moore

The final fixtures of 2008 were played over the weekend in the Manx Petroleums Outdoor Winter League Bowling Club and once again there were a number of surprise results with the biggest benefactors being the westerners, Beachcombers and Govags.

Saturday’s action was on past form a chance for Louie’s Angels to improve on their third spot in the table, but they had their wings clipped, first of all by Beachcombers 76 to 52, then Onchanites 65 to 64 to see their average drop by nearly four points.

Then the following day fourth placed Mix ‘n’ Match lost both their fixtures to see their average slip after two defeats but they did manage to move up one place above the Angels as a small consolation.

Beachcombers had just one loser as they opened with a score just short of their best, they then beat Onchanites by 17 points to move off the bottom of the table going into the Christmas break.

The best players were Margaret Tasker in both outings for the Angels; Bernard Kaighin and Ian Pendlebury (Beachcombers); along with Onchanite’s Paula Firth in her two games.

On Sunday The Govags recorded their best two totals of the campaign, firstly beating Mix ‘n’ Match by 11 points, then Parkers 80-73. This after the Parkers had scored an 85 against an under strength Rejects.

Then with a full team and a fighting performance from the Club’s youngest member, Casey Bolton, Rejects inflicted the second defeat of the afternoon on Mix ‘n’ Match.

Leading performers were Bert Quayle, John Lightfoot, Ray Kelly (Govags); Steve Cook, Ben Dugdale (Mix ‘n’ Match); Sean Cade, Sid Bolton (Rejects) and for Parkers it was Brian Woodall, twice along with Mike Higgins.

Results - Saturday December 13: Louie’s Angels 52 (1) Beachcombers 76 (5); Beachcombers 74 (3) Onchanites 57 (3); Onchanites 65 (4) Louie’s Angels 64 (2). Sunday December 14: Govags 81 (3), Mix ‘n’ Match 70 (3); Rejects 57 (2), Parkers 85 (4); Mix ‘n’ Match 67 (3), Rejects 71 (3); Parkers 73 (3), Govags 80 (3).

Last week’s midweek round robin had 35 participants separated into two groups; the triples were won by Terry Moore, Peter Clague and Roy Murphy, ahead of Ken Karran, David Turner and Les Halsall; while in third it was Bert Quayle, Philippa Fletcher and Peter Karran.

The other section was played as doubles with Margaret Tasker and Ken Clarke taking the honours ahead of Jack Lee and Lynda Clarke (second) and Geoff Osborn and Brian Keig (third).

Christmas programme (all subject to the weather): Saturday 20 December, Round Robin; Sunday 21 December, free day; Wednesday 24 December, no midweek Round Robin; Saturday 27 December, Round Robin & Xmas Tombola; Sunday 28 December, free day; Wednesday 31 December, End of Year Round Robin; Saturday 3 January 2009, league programme resumes. If the Saturday dates are not possible then they will be held the following day.

Manx Petroleums Outdoor Winter League Bowling Club - Week ending 07 December

By Steve Moore

Saturday’s programme on another cold but bright day in the Manx Petroleums Outdoor Winter League Bowling Club saw the four teams play their opponents twice, each on a home and away basis.

Let’s focus first on two of the lower placed teams Govags and Rejects - their opening encounter finished with a low scoring result, not helped by the Rejects being a player short.

It went in favour of Govags 61 to 48; then in the reversal Rejects scored two points more but their opponents improved by 11. The best players were Jack Lee and Phil Parker (Govags); Sid Bolton and Sean Cade for Rejects.

The other contests were all Castletown affairs with the Cannons playing the Corkers – once again the opener was very close with the Cannons winning 4-2 on games but going down by just four points; the Corkers having two losers on 14.

Next time out the gap finished slightly wider, again in favour of the Corkers, as they won four games. Cannons had two high losers this time, one on 13 and the other reached 14. Top performers were Derek Lewney and Val Macfarlane (Corkers) and for their opponents it was Ron Williams in both fixtures.

Results for Saturday December 6: Govags 61 (3), Rejects 48 (3); Rejects 50 (2), Govags 72 (4); Castletown Cannons 69 (4), Castletown Corkers 73 (2); Castletown Corkers 78 (4), Castletown Cannons 71 (2).

With one of their closest rivals having a difficult session the afternoon before, Sunday was surely a chance for Seven Up to open a gap between themselves and the chasing group.

But sadly for them they were forced to concede a game in each fixture to finish with two scores under 60 and see their average drop by over four points. First they put up a brave fight against the Parkers to share the games but finish with a 17 point deficit; then they went down to Bits ‘n’ Bobs who recorded their first win in the league with a four games to two success.

Leading players were Mike Thomas (Parkers), Dave Comish (Bits ‘n’ Bobs) and for Seven Up it was Kevin Quirk and Ray Watterson. Well done also to Arthur Ashcroft who stepped in while not 100 per cent after a recent fall.

The remaining clash of the day saw the Parkers finish just three short of a maximum points win when they beat Bits ‘n’ Bobs for whom their top player was John Watters, while for the winners it was Peter Karran.

Results for Sunday December 7: Seven Up 58 (3), Parkers 75 (3); Parkers 87 (5), Bits ‘n’ Bobs 61 (1); Bits ‘n’ Bobs 67 (4), Seven Up 59 (2).

Manx Petroleums Outdoor Winter League Bowling Club - Week ending 30 November

By Steve Moore

A frosty reception greeted the players on Sunday in the Manx Petroleums Outdoor Winter League Bowling Club with the three teams taking the fixture tally so far this season to 50 on a weekend with just one set of games.

First into the fray were Louie’s Angels occupying third and Mix ‘n’ Match in fifth place and the end result was as close as their league positions with only two points separating them at the end. The advantage went in favour of Mix ‘n’ Match 73 to 71 with the top players being Trish Bull (Angels) and Dave Pease (Mix).

The victors then went back into action against the Parkers and inflicted a heavy defeat on their opponents as they hit the 80 mark to move within touching distance of the four teams above them. Leading performers were Ben Dugdale, Nigel and Dave Thomas for Mix ‘n’ Match and for the Parkers, Terry Moore.

With the playing surface staying pretty solid out of the sun, the day’s final contest saw a draw on games, but a 16 point margin in favour of the Angels, best performer for them being Trish Bull, once again and for The Parkers it was Joanne Smith and making it a double, Terry Moore.

Results for Sunday November 30: Louie’s Angels 71 (2), Mix ‘n’ Match 73 (4); Mix ‘n’ Match 80 (4), The Parkers 39 (2); The Parkers 58 (3), Louie’s Angels 74 (3).

With no fixtures on Saturday it was a chance for the first weekend round robin and 28 hardy players took part in a doubles session. In the black group it was the Murphy household who took home the honours when Joan and Roy beat John Lightfoot and Philippa Fletcher (second) and Derek Clark and Trish Bull into third. The pairing of Alec Taylor and Peter Clague triumphed in the yellows, second place went to Les Halsall and Joanne Smith, while in third it was David Turner and Rita Callister.

Last Wednesday’s session was under threat due to the damp conditions but play did go ahead with 39 entrants being split into two sets of triples. The yellow group ended on a three way tie which was settled in favour of Ken Karran, Derek Clark and Wendy Cowin, just beating Roy Murphy, Ken Clarke and Brenda Hawkard; while third went to Geoff Mayles, Shirley Whelan and Peter Karran. There were clear winners in the black section, Margaret Tasker, John Watters and Victor Corlett, but the other two places were decided after a draw – Peter Clague, Brian Keig and Joanne Smith taking runners-up ahead of Tom Wilson, Les Halsall and Flo Kelly.

Manx Petroleums Outdoor Winter League Bowling Club - Week ending 23 November

By Steve Moore

The weather may have been bitterly cold but the action on the green was hot in the Manx Petroleums Outdoor Winter League Bowling Club on Saturday with all four teams hitting above their average scores and two of them notching up highest results.

Benefitting the most, and proving they are serious title contenders, were Seven Up. Even without their captain – get well soon Arthur - they hit two scores over 80 to move into second place in the table.

The Govags, however, lost their opening fixture by just five points, but then recorded their first win and two scores of 78 on a good day for the westerners.

Bits n Bobs are still finding their way as newcomers, but a best score of 67 helped them to move closer to that 60 points average mark.

The Rejects meanwhile won six individual games, five of them in their first outing, but like the temperature slipped down in their second fixture against an in form Seven Up.

Leading performances came from Ray Kelly and John Lightfoot (Govags); Alec Taylor in both games for Seven Up; Sid Bolton and Wendy Cowin (Rejects) and Mike Ware along with Tom Wilson (Bits n Bobs).

Results for Saturday November 22: The Govags 78 (2), Seven Up 83 (4); The Rejects 77 (5), Bits n Bobs 67 (1); Seven Up 82 (5), The Rejects 52 (1); Bits n Bobs 63 (2), The Govags 78 (4).

Far from ideal conditions greeted Sunday’s players with some heavy hail showers and a very cold wind to contend with; but proving they are keen to keep their hands on the title, Hot Shots went away with the two best scores of the weekend – 85 against Castletown Cannons and 84 when they beat Beachcombers.

Top player for the league leaders in both outings was John Kennish; whilst for their opponents it was Ron Williams (Cannons) and Tom Lord (Beachcombers).

Probably the best thing of the afternoon was that there were only three teams taking part, which meant we could all get away and thaw out that little bit quicker - but not before Castletown Cannons equalled their highest score to date with a five games to one success against Beachcombers. Leading the way were Ron Williams once again for the Cannons and Ian Pendlebury for Beachcombers.

Results for Sunday November 23: Castletown Cannons 47 (2), The Hot Shots 85 (4); The Hot Shots 84 (4), Beachcombers 54 (2); Beachcombers 48 (1), Castletown Cannons 81 (5).

In the ever popular mid-week round robin, 36 contestants played in two groups of triples which saw Brian Lowe, Kath King and Ken Clarke come out on top in the yellows, just ahead of Tom Wilson, Peter Karran and Ray Kelly. In the black section the winners were three of the Angels team, Margaret Tasker, Ken Karran and Trish Bull; while in second came Roy Murphy, Derek Land and Maureen Trustham. The first of the weekend round robins will be held this Saturday – weather permitting.

Manx Petroleums Outdoor Winter League Bowling Club - Week ending 16 November

Saturday’s action in the Manx Petroleums Outdoor Winter League Bowling Club saw the leading two teams go head to head with the Hot Shots blowing away their opponents in a five games to one victory, but both sides saw their averages slump on an afternoon of strange scores.

Louie’s Angels went into their clash with the leaders Hot Shots averaging 81.5 points but came away from the day down on 78.7 and in fact the other two suffered also, Hot Shots from 84.8 to 83.6 and Onchanites 70.0 down to 67.9.

On a day with just three sides playing, the opener between the Angels and Hot Shots ended 87 to 70 in favour of the champions; next up Angels fared slightly better as they beat Onchanites before the final clash saw Hot Shots held to their lowest tally of the campaign by an Onchanites outfit that also won three of the six games.

The best performances came from Ian Moore and Phil Kerruish (Hot Shots), Margaret Tasker and Trish Bull (Angels) and Derek Clarke and Paula Firth (Onchanites).

Results for Saturday November 15: The Hot Shots 87 (5), Louie’s Angels 70 (1); Louie’s Angels 76 (4), Onchanites 65 (2); Onchanites 58 (3), The Hot Shots 73 (3).

With the leading duo scoring below average, Sunday saw the chance for two of the chasing teams – Castletown Corkers and Mix n Match - to close the gap and they both opened with great results dropping just three points between them.

Castletown Cannons didn’t get fired up as Mix n Match just missed out on a perfect score with an 87 to 55 opener; meanwhile Castletown Corkers blitzed their way to their first maximum of the season, almost doubling the points of the Parkers.

Leading players were Peter Oates (Cannons), Dave Pease (Mix n Match), Derek Lewney (Corkers) and Terry Moore (Parkers).

So having warmed up in their first games, it was time for the big two to go into battle and once again when this type of fixture is played it ended with quite a low scoring encounter - 69 points and three games apiece. Dave Pease (Mix n Match) having a good afternoon and Val Macfarlane (Corkers) were the top performers.

The final game saw the Parkers improve on their first outing while the Cannons recorded exactly the same score. Mike Thomas was best for Parkers while saving his team’s blushes again was Peter Oates.

Results for Sunday November 16: Castletown Cannons 55 (1), Mix n Match 87 (5); Castletown Corkers 90 (6), The Parkers 47 (0); Mix n Match 69 (3), Castletown Corkers 69 (3); The Parkers 87 (5), Castletown Cannons 55 (1).

A glorious afternoon greeted the 48 entrants in last week’s round robin and due to the large number they were split into three groups of doubles and triples.

The black triples produced the closest finish with John Lightfoot, Victor Corlett and Doug Macfarlane just pipping John Watters, Maurice O’Reilly and Dave Whalley.

In the yellows the girls shone through, Kath King, Val Macfarlane and Trish Bull romping home, with their closest rivals being Roy Murphy, John Blindell and Maureen Trustham.

Mix n Match had a busy weekend in the Manx Petroleums Outdoor Winter League Bowling Club, but began on Saturday being a player short, then the following day just missed out on a maximum score, each session being played on a difficult surface after some heavy rain.

Both days had three teams taking part – in game 31 of the campaign Mix n Match took on one of the stronger teams in the league, Seven Up. Not a good time to be giving a 15 point head start; which turned out to be the difference at the end. Tony Dugdale was top performer for Mix, while Geoff Osborn was best for Seven Up.

Newcomers Bits n Bobs had a tough afternoon, opening with their worst score when they faced Seven Up, then recording their best tally even though they lost 5-1 on games against Mix n Match. Top players were Tom Wilson (Bits n Bobs), three of the Seven Up squad – Alec Taylor, Arthur Ashcroft and Roy Murphy; Voirrey Curphey (Bits) and once again Tony Dugdale.

Results for Saturday November 8: Mix n Match 65 (2), Seven Up 80 (4); Seven Up 86 (5), Bits n Bobs 46 (1); Bits n Bobs 64 (1), Mix n Match 75 (5).

In Sunday’s re-arranged fixtures Mix n Match made hard work of Onchanites who showed up without a full quota, which for the second day is a pity considering the amount of signed-on members not committed to a team. Next up The Parkers took advantage of their opponents shortage of players to beat them by 14 points, before they then fell to a comprehensive defeat by Mix n Match who just missed out on a maximum 90 score.

Nigel Thomas, son Dave were having a good weekend, Tony Dugdale were top players for Mix n Match; for Onchanites it was Erwin Gelling and Derek Clarke and for The Parkers Peter Karran and Mike Thomas.

Results for Sunday November 9: Mix n Match 76 (4), Onchanites 49 (2); Onchanites 61 (2), The Parkers 75 (4); The Parkers 60 (1), Mix n Match 89 (5).

Last Wednesday’s round robin session was played in near perfect conditions with 38 participants being split into two groups. In the doubles it was Louis Callister and Peter Clague who sparkled, beating Margaret Tasker and Roland Hamley; while in third it was Ken Radcliffe and Edward Trustham.

On fire in the triples were Maurice O’Reilly, Ray Kelly and Derek Clarke; second were Tom Wilson, Ken Karran and Andy Hawkard, just ahead of Terry Moore, Joan Murphy and Dave Whalley.

What a difference a weekend makes - perfect weather as teams hit six scores of eighty plus in the Manx Petroleums Outdoor Winter League Bowling Club with Onchanites recording the highest tally on Saturday and a clash between the top two sides of last season on Sunday.

Out to prove they are serious contenders this time round, Louie’s Angels opened with an 81-65 success over The Govags with their star performer being Rita Callister and for their opponents, Jack Lee.

Next fixture saw a great battle which ended three-all on games and a three point difference in the scores, which went in favour of Onchanites against Rejects. Flo Kelly (Onchanites) and Keith Watterson were the top players.

The Rejects couldn’t maintain that form in their next outing when Louie’s Angels became the only side so far to record four scores over the 80 mark. Trevor Quayle was best for the victors, while for Rejects it was captain Sean Cade.

Outperforming the Angels on the day were Onchanites who scored 85 against the Govags to take their points tally for the afternoon to 166. Both captains were the top players, Derek Clarke (Onchanites) and once again Jack Lee.

Sunday’s action kicked off in sunshine more like August than November, with just three teams playing the opener saw last season’s top two go head to head in an unusual scoring game which saw just one of the losers reach double figures.

The champions Hot Shots came out on top 74 to 63, for whom John Kennish was best and taking that honour for Castletown Corkers were Andy Clark and John Saunders.

The Corkers then went straight back into the fray and dropped just four points when they overcame the Beachcombers. Derek Lewney was the leading player and saving their opponents blushes was Ray Hardman.

If the Beachcombers found that game tough things didn’t get any easier when they went down 47-90 against the Hot Shots. Putting up the best fight was Bernard Kaighin who fell just one short and for the winners the star was Shelley Kennish.

Results for Sunday 2 November: Hot Shots 74 (4), Castletown Corkers 63 (2); Castletown Corkers 86 (5), Beachcombers 50 (1); Beachcombers 47 (0), Hot Shots 90 (6).

Last week’s social outing on Wednesday saw just 28 hardy entrants compete as doubles and in the black group the winners were Trish Bull and Louis Callister, followed by Sean Cade and Brian Keig, and in third it was Margaret Tasker and Wendy Cowin.

It was closer at the top of the yellow section - sneaking home were Roy Murphy and Kath King, next came Joanne Smith and John Lightfoot and just two points off the top were Ray Kelly and Rita Callister.

Game 14 saw a very close affair with Beachcombers beating Rejects by just three points; top players being Lil Smith (Beachcombers) and Edward Trustham. The Rejects struggled as the weather worsened with only Lyn Bolton reaching double figures against high flying Hot Shots, for whom Jenny Moore was top scorer.
