Harrison Trophy

Saturday 25th July saw the Harrison Trophy - Two Bowls singles Competition played to a conclusion at the Flat Green at
Onchan Park.

Some inspiring bowls led to the Final  being played between the on form Men's Captain Eric Maddocks and Matt Quayle who had produced steady bowls all day to get into the Final. The lead changed hands on many occasions but the players were level at 9 shots each on the second from last end, with an extra end looming, but Maddocks experience shone through and scored with his two bowls to win 11 shots to 9.

World Singles Champion of Champions

The Isle of Mans stature and reputation on the International Scene of the Flat Green bowling world was once again enhanced in the past week due to the efforts of Stephen McIntyre at the World Champion of Champions Singles Competition at the Centre for Bowling Excellence at Northfield in Ayr.  Stephen representing the island at this prestigious event won 5 of his section games against Malaysia, Spain, Botswana, United States and New Zealand and narrowly losing in the tie break to Canada, and with just a little luck during the remaining section games may have just crept into the final qualifying stages.  Probably the highlight was defeating the Malaysian Champion Azim Ariffin who plays professionally all over the world.

It was an outstanding effort by Stephen and this coupled with the Flat Greens efforts at the European Championships,  it shows that where Flat Green Bowls are involved at International Competition we are certainly heading in right direction. Stephen is pictured after his win against Malaysia with Azim Ariffin.

7th European Team Championships in Paphos, Cyprus - March 09

The Isle of Man Flat Green Bowling Team who represented the Island in the 7th European Team Championships in Paphos, Cyprus, returned earlier this month after some exceptional performances in this high profile International event. Competing against some of the top teams in the bowling world such as England, Ireland, Wales and eventual winners Scotland also Island neighbours Jersey and Guernsey as well as Europe's best Spain, Portugal, Israel, Holland, Germany, Turkey, European Select and host nation Cyprus.

Some of the matches were played in horrendous conditions including hail and thunder storms. This did not stop the Isle of Man team not only competing against these bowling giants but beating them and amassing their highest points total and highest finish in the Championships.  Highlights included superb wins over England who were represented by one of the worlds top players - Simon Skelton and also comfortable wins in both singles and pairs over Jersey, Guernsey, Spain, Holland, Portugal and Cyprus to name but a few.

These performances are testimony to the players who represented the island with pride considering the resources we have at our disposal compared to the other countries.

Lawn Bowls by Anne Marie McQuade - Sunday 17 August 08

Another busy week in the Flat Green Season saw the Men's Singles Final played on Sunday the 17th August between last years winner Andy Munro and Stephen McIntyre.

Having seen 4 Seasons of weather during the game it did not affect the standard of bowls played. McIntyre took an early lead but Munro battled back to 8-6 behind, a decisive end of 4 shots saw McIntyre take control again and although Munro chipped away at the lead McIntyre closed out the game and deservedly won 21-10. This win qualifies Stephen to play at the European Championships in Cyprus next year as well as the Mens World Singles Champion of Champions in Northfield, Ayr next Summer.

Wednesday the 20th saw the final stages of the Onchan Commissioners' triples, A round robin saw the four triples teams playing each other over 6 ends. Chairmen of the Onchan Commisioners, Derek Crellin played in one of the triples as a guest player before presenting the trophy and commemorative plates to the eventual winners, Andy Munro, Brian Fisher and Skip Eric Maddocks.

This week also saw the Semi Finals of the Ladies Singles with Jean Harrison defeating May Moore and Pauline Kelly defeating Anne Marie McQuade 21-17. McQuade took a commanding lead and looked to have the game in her grasp until the weather worsened and in atrocious conditions saw Kelly use all her experiance to claw back the deficit and win her place in the final.

We would also like to wish Andy Munro the best of luck when he represents the Island in the World Singles Champion of Champions commencing Saturday 30th August in Aberdeen, Scotland.
